Access card and Google Wallet not working together on Android
Your phone can offer only one tap card at a time. Here is why the two fight, how to fix it by hand for free, and how TapSwitch does it for you.
Why does my access card stop working when Google Wallet is set up?
An Android phone offers only one tap card at a time, called the default. When Google Wallet becomes the default, door readers get Google Wallet instead of your access card, so the door stays shut.
Make the access card the default and the card machine at the shop stops seeing Google Wallet instead. Without help, you end up switching back and forth by hand every day.
How do I switch the default tap card by hand?
You can do it for free in your phone's settings:
- Open Settings and search for contactless.
- Open Contactless payments. Some phones call it Tap and pay.
- Pick your access card before you reach the office door.
- Pick Google Wallet again before you pay.
If your phone offers a setting to use the default unless another payment app is open, turn it on and try that first. Some phones, including the Oppo Find X9, do not have it.
What does TapSwitch actually do?
TapSwitch does the switching for you. Your access card stays the default all day. When you open Google Wallet, TapSwitch hands the tap over to it. When you close Google Wallet, the access card comes back.
You never open Settings again. Try it on the home page.
Can Google Wallet be the default instead?
Yes. Turn on Reverse mode in the app. Google Wallet then stays the default, and your access card takes over only while its app is open.
Does it work on Samsung, Xiaomi or Pixel phones?
TapSwitch is built and tested on Oppo phones running ColorOS. It may work on other Android phones with Android 16 or newer, but none have been tested yet.
The 14 day free trial lets you find out on your own phone before you pay.
Is it safe, and can it see my cards?
TapSwitch cannot read card numbers, payments or door logs. It only picks which app answers the reader.
It goes online once a day to check for updates, and there is no account to sign in to. You can scan the file for free on VirusTotal before you install it. How to check it
Why is it not on the Play Store?
TapSwitch is made and sold by one person, straight from this site. You download the file here and your phone asks once whether to allow it.
Because it does not come from the Play Store, your phone shows a warning, which is normal.
What happens after the 14 day free trial?
TapSwitch costs US$4.99, paid once. If you do not buy it, TapSwitch stops switching when the trial ends and your phone goes back to how it was. You owe nothing.
Try it on your own phone for 14 days, free. Setting it up takes about five minutes.
